The Cheap Website Trap

The $3000 overseas website might feel like a deal–but there’s a real cost to the bargain website.
Last June, a new client reached out. They were looking for an SEO agency in Vancouver. They had recently invested $3000 in a new website, but results had fallen flat.
Here’s what happened.
Why do cheap websites usually flop?
Bargain websites often rely on generic templates, poor coding, and little strategic planning. They may look okay, but generate fewer leads, rank poorly in search engines, and provide a frustrating UI/UX.
How does professional web design improve SEO in Vancouver?
Professional web design incorporates technical SEO, optimized site architecture, fast loading speeds, mobile responsiveness, structured data, and local keyword optimization, helping businesses rank for related local search terms.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?
SEO helps your website rank in search engines like Google. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) improves visibility in featured answers and AI assistants, while Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) helps content become trusted by generative AI platforms. Together, they increase online visibility across modern search.
Why hire Jooska for web design and/or SEO in Vancouver and throughout Canada?
Jooska builds performance-focused websites that combine strategic design, SEO, AEO, GEO, fast page speeds, conversion optimization, and custom branding. Rather than simply creating attractive websites, we build digital assets focused on generating more traffic and leads to support long-term growth.
Just about every business owner today knows SEO is important. However, we need to be realistic. What does SEO actually do–and is it worth the investment?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the umbrella term for tweaking content both on-site and off-site so a particular website shows up higher on Google and other search engines, too. Page one is the gold standard. Today, SEO is also joined by AEO and GEO as digital marketing strategies used to make your website visible through AI-driven search. Web designers and developers need a good grasp of all three to make it easier for potential buyers to discover your business online.
People with a basic understanding of programming and web design, leveraged by AI, can create a website that works well enough on the surface, and that’s what happened to our client. Customers already familiar with the business had no problem finding them. They just Googled the name. However, the website wasn’t generating any organic growth. They were invisible to new people, forcing the business to pump $1000 a month into Google Ads to drive traffic to a website that hadn’t been set up to differentiate their brand or rank competitively.
With uninspired branding, no SEO strategy, and generic calls to action, ROI on AdWords was low–less than 1%. The cheap website had now cost the client $15,000 over the year, and they had little to show for it.
The client HAD been promised a website that was “SEO-friendly.” It’s a vague term often used in the industry and ultimately meaningless.
In this case, the designer/developer had sprinkled a few generic industry terms around the website, installed an SEO plugin, and called it a day.
Search engines don’t give away page one. A website will rarely hit the top of Google after it’s completed. Rather, it takes an ongoing strategy of creating good articles and quality links that support your key terms. You need to convince Google you’re an honest, reputable business that’s worth recommending. This typically takes between six months and a year, with results starting about three months in.
There are no shortcuts.
Peppering in generic terms everywhere on the site and saying it multiple times over a multi-page website will still get you absolutely no SEO-related traffic. Nada. Zilch. Zero.
In this case, the website didn’t even show up in the first 10 pages of Google.
SEO-friendly websites in general don’t rank without hours of elbow grease. It’s an empty term that sounds convincing, but provides nothing in terms of actual solutions. A whopping 95% of clicks happen on page one of search results. If your website isn’t on the first page, it’s rarely going to be clicked on. That means no discovery and no new business.
After providing a free SEO analysis and noting the client’s goals, we determined it would cost about $4,000 as a competitively priced SEO agency in Vancouver. Our goal was to realign the website to meet Google’s best practices and add polish to the brand, creating several new pages to target the right combination of keyword phrases.
It was a steep add-on to what was already a $15,000 investment, but doing nothing was even worse.
Consider the numbers:
If a professional site converts 3% of visitors and a cheap site converts only 1%, you aren’t saving money. You are losing 66% of potential revenue every month.
There was also ad waste, as the client was spending $1000 a month to drive people to an uninspiring website that was converting less than 1% of traffic.
Professional web design and SEO lower cost-per-acquisition by turning your website into a high-performance tool. As a web design and SEO agency in Vancouver, it was important to differentiate the client by highlighting their history and long-standing status as an active community member and local business.
Inquiries almost doubled in four months after completion, and the cost of the SEO and social media campaign is comparable to what they were investing in AdWords, with much better returns. For this particular client, social media unlocked a more powerful client funnel than we had predicted.
We’ve worked with over a half-dozen clients who had nearly the same story. The added cost to fix a website is often higher than investing in an agency that will do it right the first time.
But don’t give up.
As a professional SEO agency serving Vancouver and Toronto, we help you avoid expensive mistakes and implement SEO strategy into branding and web design that drive your unique selling points.
The right approach can transform your website from another line of expense into your business’ most powerful sales tool.
